HbbTV releases Test Suite 2026‑1 with new DRM and WAVE test coverage

Geneva, 2 April 2026 – The HbbTV Association, a global initiative dedicated to providing open standards for the delivery of advanced interactive TV services through broadcast and broadband networks, has announced the release of version 2026-1 of the HbbTV Conformance Test Suite.

The latest update further strengthens the Test Suite’s role as the central resource for manufacturers, broadcasters and platform operators seeking device compliance with HbbTV specifications and related standards. Test Suite v2026-1 delivers expanded coverage, improved quality and new functionality reflecting the evolving requirements of modern TV services.

The 2026-1 release contains 3,439 test cases, of which 2,907 have been approved. This includes 64 newly approved tests introduced for the first time, extending the Test Suite’s ability to validate the latest features and behaviours expected in HbbTV-compliant devices.

In addition, more than 180 test cases have received quality improvements, including updates designed to better reflect real-world use cases and implementation patterns observed across the industry.

A key enhancement in this release is the addition of new approved test cases covering the Media Source Extensions (MSE) API from the CTA WAVE project and covering Widevine DRM, supporting the growing importance of secure, standards-based media delivery. The update also integrates test cases previously available only in the UK, ensuring broader applicability and reducing the need for region-specific test packages.

“HbbTV’s ongoing investment in expanding and refining the Test Suite is essential to ensuring the reliability, interoperability and quality of HbbTV-compliant devices and services worldwide,” said Vincent Grivet, Chair of the HbbTV Association. “With Test Suite v2026-1, we continue to strengthen the foundations for secure, consistent and future-proof TV experiences across all markets.”

The HbbTV Test Suite is an essential tool for manufacturers, enabling them to verify that TV sets and set-top boxes conform to the latest HbbTV specifications. For broadcasters and platform operators, it plays a vital role in increasing consistency across devices and reducing implementation and maintenance costs.

The Test Suite is available through registered HbbTV test centres and, as a convenience, to HbbTV members for use in their own facilities.
