native media playback vs JavaScript libraries (e.g. dash.js), VOD vs live/linear, HbbTV and DVB-I
Proposer: Jon Piesing, TP Vision
Session goals:
HbbTV and DVB-I both allow streaming playback both via DASH player included in the TV and via a JavaScript library included in an app. Both have advantages and disadvantages.
- More or less (or zero) investment in developing / deploying an app
- Dependence on (or independence from) quality, resilience, reliability of DASH player integrated in different TV sets
- Ability (or inability) to exploit new DASH features or existing ones not (yet) included / tested in TVs
The HbbTV Requirements Group has felt that JavaScript based players were the future and considered freezing the features of the included DASH player. Others have taken the opposite view and want to enhance DASH playback to do DRM without an app.
This session will discuss ideas, opinions & experiences of these two options. Of course it may be there’s no single right answer.
